  3. What Is It?
  4. ~~~~~~~~~~~
  5. Windows 3.1 provides built-in support for Common Dialog Windows to perform
  6. operations such as File Open and File Save As from within an application.
  7. These Common Dialog Windows provide a consistent interface across all 
  8. applications that use them.  However, you still have to climb and descend
  9. directory trees and manually select drives or file types to locate the file,
  10. type, or directory you want.

  12. Open Axess makes it easier to use the Windows 3.1 Common Dialog Windows for
  13. file selection by:
  14.  
  15. 1. automatically remembering the last 5 Types, the last 5 Files, and the last
  16.    5 Directories used for each application that uses Common Dialog Windows.
  17.  
  18. 2. allowing you to specify 5 additional Permanent Types, Files, and
  19.    Directories for each application that uses Common Dialog Windows.
  20.  
  21. 3. allowing you to create and change to a new subdirectory from within a file
  22.    selection Common Dialog Window.  This permits you to create and change to
  23.    a new subdirectory from within the Save As Dialog Window before saving a
  24.    file.

  26. 4. allowing you to optionally display the following file properties at the 
  27.    bottom of the Common Dialog Window for a selected file:
  28.      the file size in bytes,
  29.      the date and time the file was last modified, and
  30.      the file attributes: Read, Write, Archive, and Hidden.

  32. 5. allowing you to find a file from within a file selection Common Dialog 
  33.    Window and open the file by double-clicking on it.
  34.  
  35. 6. making the above options available by attaching itself to the Control Menu
  36.    of the Common Dialog Window.

  48.     This version added the following corrections and features:
  49.     -    The detection algorithm for file dialog boxes has been
  50.          improved, which eliminates the annoying time lag between
  51.          the display of a file dialog and the connection of Open
  52.          Axess.

  54.     -    Occasionally the Open Axess system button disappeared after
  55.          a standard file dialog lost and regained focus.  This has
  56.          been corrected.
  57.  
  58.     -    Support for files on removable media has been improved.  Open
  59.          Axess will now prompt the user to insert the disk containing
  60.          the desired file.  Previous versions were at the mercy of the
  61.          host application to service bad or missing files.

  64.     This version was in direct response to user mail regarding a subtle
  65.     problem with Open Axess crashing the Program Manager when browsing
  66.     from the "Change Icon" window.  This seems to be due to a peculiar
  67.     handling of the browse file dialog by Windows.

  69.     Open Axess is now disabled when the "Change Icon" browse button is
  70.     pressed. (Sorry, but you'll have to browse by hand - not fatal in
  71.     this case)

  73. Version 1.04
  74.     Some users reported a bug which appeared in the previous version of
  75.     Open Axess which caused the program to crash occasionally during a
  76.     "SaveAs" operation.  This was due to the fact that memory was being
  77.     allocated in an improper way.  This was corrected.

  79.     Previously noted conflicts between Open Axess and the Program Manager
  80.     "Change Icon" file browser were resolved.  This problem also
  81.     affected Microsoft's Dialog Editor program.

  83.     The AXESSDLL.DLL file was renamed to AXESSLIB.DLL.  The older file
  84.     may be deleted.

  86.     Added was support for Microsoft Project's file dialog boxes.

  89. Version 2.00
  90.     A simple file finder was added, which permits users to search entire
  91.     drives and or directories for a file specification.  Double clicking
  92.     will open any found file into the current application.

  94.     Interaction with Microsoft Project and PowerPoint was improved.  Some
  95.     users reported problems with these applications.

  97.     The ability to edit the maximum number of entries in an Open Axess
  98.     list of Types, Files, or Directories was added to the Open Axess
  99.     Configuration Dialog Window.

  101.     For registered users, the macros for Word for Windows and Word Perfect
  102.     for Windows have been improved.  Problems with exporting files from
  103.     Word have been corrected.  The file type list in the Open Dialog for
  104.     both applications was corrected.

  106. Version 2.10
  107.     This version fixes the bug that caused the error message "cannot find
  108.     BWCCxxx.DLL", (where 'xxx' denotes a Language setting in the Windows
  109.     International Control Panel other than 'English (American)') when Open
  110.     Axess is loaded.

  112.     AXESSLIB.DLL and BWCC.DLL (if not used by another running application)
  113.     are now unloaded from memory when you close Open Axess in Windows.

  118.     To install the new version, copy AXESS.EXE, AXESSLIB.DLL, & AXESS.HLP 
  119.     files to your Windows directory, and copy BWCC.DLL to the SYSTEM 
  120.     subdirectory in Windows.  If you are replacing a previous version of
  121.     Open Axess, make sure you close any running copy before you replace 
  122.     it.

  124.     Once installed, you can create a program item for Open Axess and place
  125.     the icon in your Program Manger Startup group to load Open Axess when
  126.     Windows is started.

  131.     If you are a registered user of a previous version of Open Axess, you
  132.     may freely install the new version.

  136.     If you have been using Open Axess for a while and still have not
  137.     registered with us, please do so.  It's only $10, and your
  138.     registration fee helps fund improvements to Open Axess as well as
  139.     new programs we would like to write.  Registration also insures that
  140.     we can notify you of any program changes.

  143.     using CompuServe's online Shareware Registration Database.  GO SWREG
  144.     and follow the instructions there to register shareware.  The
